Rabbi Jeffrey Abraham
Rabbi Abraham is thrilled to be the new rabbi at Congregation Sons of Israel here in Nyack! Acting as pulpit rabbi, Jewish educator both formally and informally spanning all ages and interests, pastoral counselor, and outreach agent to the community, Rabbi Jeffrey Abraham has a multitude of experience, and was ordained from the Jewish Theological Seminary (JTS) in May of 2011.
Rabbi Abraham served as the Legacy Heritage Rabbinic Fellow in Canton, Ohio from 2008-2011 and the student rabbi in Benton Harbor, Michigan for 2010-2011. He worked as rabbinic intern at Congregation B’nai Israel in Rockville, Maryland, East Meadow Jewish Center in East Meadow, Long Island, and Congregation Anshai Torah in Dallas, Texas. Rabbi Abraham also worked at Jewish Funds for Justice and Federation of Jewish Men’s Clubs. Additionally, he was awarded the 2008 Rabbi Harold H. Gordon Prize and the 2011 Albert Pappenheim Prize in Professional Skills both by the Jewish Theological Seminary.
While living in Israel, Rabbi Abraham worked as the Jewish Life Coordinator for “Kivunim New Directions”, a “gap year” program. Kivunim is an International Travel Program, and he had the opportunity to inspire and accompany the pre-college students to eight countries around the world. Rabbi Abraham and his wife Lauren also worked as the Resident Directors at Mathilde Schechter Residence Hall for LIST College (JTS and Columbia) Freshmen and Sophomores. Rabbi Abraham was the faculty advisor and assistant principal at the Ivry Prozdor Hebrew High School at JTS in New York for three years prior. He was also the Rabbinic Mentor and Family B’nei Mitzvah Coordinator at Rodeph Sholom Synagogue Religious School for two years. In addition, both Rabbi Abraham and Lauren have worked at Camp Ramah in Nyack as Jewish educators.
Prior to moving to New York, Rabbi Abraham earned an M.A. in Education at the University of Judaism in Los Angeles in 2006. He also received a double B.A. in Jewish Studies and Hebrew Letters from the University of Judaism, Magna Cum Laude in 2005. At this time Rabbi Abraham was given the award for distinguished service to the University and the greater community.
Rabbi Abraham is originally from Albuquerque, New Mexico where he was born and raised. He is married to his wife Lauren, who is an educator and program coordinator at Rodeph Sholom Day School in New York. They are the proud parents of Benny Mark Abraham born in September of 2010.
