MESSAGE FROM THE RABBI

Ritual Services

We are a fully egalitarian congregation with traditional Conservative services.  Our services are participatory, with many of our members leading parts of the service and chanting Torah and Haftarah. We are often told by visitors that our services "feel" warm and very spiritual.

     Shabbat Services

Shabbat services are held every Friday evening and Saturday morning. Friday evening services begin at candle lighting time, that is 18 minutes before sunset (see monthly calendar) year round until candle lighting time is lager than 7:00 pm (typically, from the onset of Daylight Savings Time in the spring, through early September). During that time of year, Friday evening services begin at 7:00 pm.

Shabbat morning services begin every week at 9:30 am.

Youth Services

During the school year, Junior Congregation (grades 4 through 6) and Shorashim ("Roots" for grades K-3) are held once or twice a month in our Hebrew School building. Beginning one year before the Bar/Bat Mitzvah, children attend the main services in the sanctuary.

 Holiday Services

Services are held for all holidays. The schedule for services can be found on our calendar page.

Weekday Services

There is a weekday morning service every Sunday at 9am which is followed by bagels and coffee in the social hall. When one of our members is sitting shiva, there is an evening (MaÆariv) service at the home of the mourner each night of the shiva.

Bar/Bat Mitzvah

Children celebrate their Bar/Bat Mitzvah shortly after their thirteenth birthday according to the Hebrew calendar (girls have the option of making their celebration up to a full year earlier). Bar and Bat Mitzvah ceremonies are held on Shabbat morning and are scheduled several years in advance. Preparation for Bar/Bat Mitzvah begins in the 3rd grade of Hebrew school and intensifies during the year prior to the ceremony with individual tutoring and increased attendance at services.

Adult Bar/Bat Mitzvah ceremonies are scheduled for groups of adults every few years. Two years of study and preparation are required.

High Holiday Tickets

All members and their immediate family (including unmarried children ages 7 to 22) receive High Holiday tickets as a benefit of membership. Children younger than 7 do not need tickets. Special low rates are available for sisters, brothers, older children or parents of members. Non-member tickets can be purchased in the synagogue office.

Torah Reading Schedule for Congregation Sons of Israel

Below is a list of upcoming Torah reading assignments.

The aliyot for Shabbat readings are broken up according to the designation in Etz Hayim Torah and Commentary.  Please be sure to consult Etz Hayim since, in a few cases, the designations in other Bibles and Tikkuns may not always match Etz Hayim.  Holiday readings are noted below.

On the list below, the first number is the aliyah number. The number in parenthesis represents the number of verses in that particular aliyah.

An Aliyah is available if it does not have a name or the word “reserved” posted next to it.  (An aliyah might be reserved for a special occasion like a Bar Mitzvah, Sisterhood/Men’s Club Shabbat, etc.)  Available readings that are listed with an asterisk (*)  are readings for which we are in particular need of volunteers. If you would like to sign up to read an aliyah (or if you have any questions, comments, need to change an assignment, or find any errors), please contact Barbara Birnbaum at thunderroad@optonline.net There may be a 2-3 day delay until your name is posted.

The reader of the 7th Aliyah also reads Maftir (unless there is a notation below that there is a special Maftir portion on that day or unless another reader requests the Maftir portion). If you would like to sign up to read a Maftir portion, you are welcome to do so.

Todah Rabah!
