MESSAGE FROM THE RABBI

Hebrew School

Classes are held for students from age four through seventh grade.  Members pay a reduced tuition rate.  (Children may attend our school for one year as non-members in the first or second grades; for subsequent years family must join the synagogue.)  Our school's approach is that of a coalition of educators led by a professional principal dedicated to finding new, exciting, and challenging ways to teach Torah to our children.

Regular classes are augmented by weekly special programs--music, films, speakers, etc.  Additionally, trips are planned forthe school each year.  Junior Congregation is a required part of the school curriculum.  Each year we hold a Consecration Shabbat service welcoming new students to the school, and a Graduation Ceremony for our seventh grade class.  Students in grade eight and above are encouraged to attend the Rockland County Hebrew High School and each receives a partial tuition scholarship from our synagogue.

This morning, the children met with Rabbi Kohn and with the help of Cantor Szenes-Strauss, we unrolled an entire Sefer Torah -- well actually one-half at a time (as the entire scroll is twice as long as the Social Hall.  Rabbi Kohn showed the children interesting points in the Torah -- large and small letters; elongated letters; dots over words; and special features, such as the Song at the Sea (for which the Cantor taught them the special melody) and Moses' farewell, which have a special shape; the Ten Commandments; the Shema; how to find the start of each book, and the Cantor taught the melody for Hazak Hazak V'nithazeik, which we sing at the end of each book.  The children were very attentive.
